At Tippin’s, we couldn’t be more proud to be a part of the Kansas City community. Since 1980 with the opening of the first Tippin’s Restaurant, Tippin’s has served fresh, hand-crafted pies to the Kansas City area and beyond. Like any true Kansas Citian, we also love high-quality, traditional Kansas City barbecue. We recently paired up with the wonderful team at Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue to test out the ultimate Kansas City food pairing: Tippin’s Pies and Jack Stack Barbecue. Founded in 1957, Jack Stack is a Kansas City barbecue legend, and their tasty offerings made for the perfect pairings with some of Tippin’s classic fruit pies. Here are our favorite pie and barbecue combinations:
Apple PieTippin’s Apple Pie has a classic, all-American flavor, full of tangy, fresh apples and warm spices. We knew we would need something bold and spicy to provide a nice contrast for the subtle and smooth apple flavor. We had trouble deciding between two different beloved Jack Stack dishes (so naturally we were forced to take a few extra delicious bites of each). The Beef Ribs, with their rich, earthy flavor, complemented the lightly spiced apples. However, the Beef Ribs faced some fierce competition from the Beef Brisket sandwich. Paired with Jack Stack’s famous spicy barbecue sauce, the juicy brisket sandwich had a hot kick of flavor that proved a great contrast to the Apple Pie.
Peach PieTippin’s Peach Pie is a brightly flavored and boldly sweet fruit pie. We wondered if the distinctive peach flavor might make it difficult to pair, but we found its match in Jack Stack’s equally bold Barbecue Chicken. Their tender, bone-in and perfectly cooked Barbecue Chicken stands out for its seriously delicious spicy rub. The flavor of the chicken provided the perfect base for both bold spice and sweet peach notes.
Cherry PieTippin’s Cherry Pie is a delectable blend of tart and sweet. We use only Montmorency cherries for these pies, in order to ensure the best quality of fruit and the brightest, most appetizing cherry red color. We loved pairing this fresh fruit pie with Jack Stack’s succulent Baby Back Ribs. The rich, fatty flavor of the ribs held its own against the bold tartness of the cherries.
Strawberry Rhubarb PieTippin’s Strawberry Rhubarb Pie has that sweet, classic taste reminiscent of summertime and Grandma’s cooking. There were two strong contenders to pair with the Strawberry Rhubarb Pie: the Spare Ribs and the Pulled Pork Sandwich. The Spare Ribs have an undertone of fruitiness that blossomed against the subtle sweetness of the pie, while the tender Pulled Pork Sandwich with Jack Stack’s original barbecue sauce proved another perfect complement to the pie.
