We asked renowned wine expert Doug Frost to come up with a list of wines to pair with Tippin’s Pies. He willingly indulged in our pies and devised these original pairings that we can’t wait to try. Consider picking up a bottle of wine with your favorite Tippin’s pie and settle in for a romantic night at home. Here’s what Doug recommends:
In general, sweet things like sweet wines, so look for wine labels that say “Late Harvest” – that’s when the grapes hang on the vine for greater ripeness and sweetness. Or even try Icewine (the Germans call it Eiswein) when the wine is made from frozen grapes. (Read more details below the infographic.)
- Key Lime Pie + Moscato d’Asti or Asti Spumante – Moscato’s wildly floral nose nestles in alongside lime’s vibrant acidity to create some new, exciting aromas and flavors. And that’s what marrying food and wine is all about.
- Cherry Pie + Doux or Extra Dry Sparkling wine – When it comes right down to it, sparkling wine goes with just about everything. But for cherry pie, you’re going to need a sweeter version, and if the bottle says Doux (sweet) or Extra Dry (don’t ask why they call it that; it’s just sweeter), you’re going to have the fruitiness this lovely pie deserves.
- Strawberry Rhubarb Pie + German Riesling (look for Spätlese or Auslese level sweetness) – Rhubarb’s tangy character merits a wine with the same crazy sweet-tart DNA and German Riesling is just the thing. Be sure to get one with some sweetness.
- Peach Pie + Late Harvest Vignoles – Vignoles is grown in the U.S. and Canada and when bottled sweet, its luscious apricot and lemon flavors make peach pie even grander.
- Apple Pie + Sauternes or Barsac (sweet Bordeaux dessert wine) – One of history’s greatest dessert wines comes from Bordeaux; it’s lush but carries spicy, tangy notes as well that act like the cinnamon dusting on an apple pie.
- Blackberry Pie + Zinfandel – In an ideal world, you’d try this with a Late Harvest Zinfandel, but any rich, young example will do. Meanwhile, there are some sweet red wines out there that can be fun too: red wines like Ménage à Trois or Apothic.
- Lemon Meringue Pie + Muscat – France’s Muscat Beaumes de Venise is a lightly fortified and honeyed wine that is flawless with this pie. But just about any sweet Muscat wine will do.
- Pumpkin Pie + Portuguese Tawny Port – You need the real thing, not an American knock-off; real Portuguese Tawny Port usually comes in denominations of 10-year-old, 20-year-old and on, but any of those will add a new dimension to delicious pumpkin pie.
- Pecan Pie + Sweet Oloroso (Spanish) Sherry – We found a great match with Dry Sack’s 15-year-old Oloroso Solera Especial but as long as you have a sweet Oloroso Sherry from Spain, you’re going to think it’s perfect too.
- French Silk Pie + Portuguese Ruby Port – One of Port’s iterations is “Ruby”: generous, exuberantly fruity and powerful enough to stand up to wine’s erstwhile challenger, chocolate.
